FEATURE: Adam Mansbach
Interviewed By: Jody Miller
Date: 2008-03-24

Adam Mansbach recently released his latest book The End of the Jews, a novel that tells the story of the Brodsky family, jumping back and forth through time and space providing intense and unforgiving character exposition and development with underlying themes of religious and racial identity. It's not his first novel on this theme; his previous novel Angry Black White Boy is currently in development as a feature film. He speaks at colleges across the United States and teaches writing at the San Francisco Art Institute. Adam is currently on tour promoting his latest book.

Adam was a prolific reader growing up - "one of those kids who constantly had a book glued to his hand." A lot of his reading - and four books in particular - had a big impact on him. So much so that he still finds and re-reads them to this day. Asked how they influenced him, he responded:

"Two of the four, the [Bruce] Brooks and the [John] Levert, certainly had an impact on my thoughts about race. All four of them -- along with...[read more]

Interviewed By: Eric Stein
Date: 2008-07-24

You may know Henry Rollins from his time with Black Flag in the early 80’s hardcore punk scene, stalking up and down the stage with teeth gnashing, barking lyrics to a frenzied crowd. This wouldn’t be a surprise, Black Flag has been dubbed one of the most important bands in the hardcore punk movement, and Rollins has also made extensive tours with his own group, the Rollins Band. You may know Henry Rollins from one of his radio shows where he spun tracks from nearly every denomination of rock music. You may have seen him on TV as host of The Henry Rollins Show discussing music, politics, and whatever else is pissing him off at the time. The show has gained notoriety for big name interviews, the frank opinions of the man himself, and blistering live performances by the most innovative rock bands around. So you may have heard him spouting off on the radio, on TV, in a magazine or standing on a bus at a busy intersection yelling through a megaphone. All this you may already have heard and seen, but what have you read?

Interviewed By: Chris DePaul
Date: 2007-03-20

Ibi Kaslik, a Canadian novelist and freelance writer currently residing in Toronto, Ontario, released her debut novel, Skinny in May 2004. The novel tells the story of one family’s struggle with negotiating their relationships while dealing with their daughter’s battle with anorexia. In an interview with the Danforth Review in the winter of 2004, Kaslik discussed her reasons behind writing Skinny and her interest in the subject itself as; “A topic that I experienced directly in my personal life and social group, I never saw eating disorders represented in media discourse in the way it played itself out in life. Somehow Kate Moss, the Karen Carpenter story, and After School Specials never cut it for me. Eating disorders and distorted body issues seemed, to me at least, to be about something more significant than the media influence on young women, and had less to do with the formulaic pop psychology pursuit of blaming...[read more]

Canadian born writer Alison Pick has been a critical darling for the past four years since her series of poetry and loose verse, “Question & Answer” won both the Bronwen Wallace Award for Poetry, as well as the National Magazine Award for Poetry. Her first novel, 2005’s “The Sweet Edge”, was a staple on many critics’ lists, along with being named one of the Globe and Mail’s Top 100 books of the year.
